Up for an early morning swim around 7ish, the air was cool
and water felt hot on the colder body parts. Soaked for a little while before
heading back to pack up our 3 days worth of guff.
Over to say farewell to Johnno’s and on the way, fuelled up
etc by about 9.30.
Heading north on the Castelreagh Highway, not far north, we
crossed the QLD border – which had a lot of water lying around.
Through Hebel
and on towards St George.
Some typical countryside today, pretty flat, wooded, sandy,
crops, and even a mob of cattle being fed on the Long Paddock- with a drover
tucked in the side drain with his fire going.
At St George, we cruised along the river for a look, before
finding the Toyota dealer, Dad’s car has a blown low beam headlight. They
didn’t have anyone to assist for 20 minutes so we went back into town for a
couple of other things, then back, where Toyota replaced the globe – it took
about 3 minutes and cost $10, Dad was pretty happy. One of the guys we spoke to
indicated that the rain they had had, was the first in 3 years, so they were
stoked about that. Lots of water lying around today, but thankfully none
falling.
I needed cash, so grabbed that, then a couple of pies from
the bakery for lunch, which we enjoyed beside the Balonne River weir, en route
to Mitchell.
The road across to Mitchell, was good, lots of large
cropping areas, we saw some signs for Cubbe Ag, so figure it might be part of
Cubbe station. There was another drover with many cattle grazing along the
road. Plenty of growth, so these cattle were looking pretty good.
The roadside verges were covered in feathery grass, which
looked great right up to the bitumen.
Had a roo hop across in front of us, had to brake reasonably
hard to avoid him, wasn’t even near sundown either.
We arrived in Mitchell about 4.30 I think and landed in
Major Mitchell CP, beside the Maranoa River, we opted for a powered site with
En suite, but have camper and tent set up…my first night under canvas on this
trip. After setting up, we headed down to the river and I took some sunset
shots and even a couple of moonrise shots.
Back for a review of the photos taken to date, in Dad’s
camper tent, all nice and warm with the heater going, it was getting awfully
cold outside. Leftovers for tea and off to bed early-ish (then got sucked into
publishing a blog for yesterday and writing this) We hope to make it to our
northern most point tomorrow – Longreach, so another early start. Time to
sleep, I hope to get up for the sunrise tomorrow… maybe!
